Abstract

Proton beam therapy is becoming increasingly important for treating cancer and is now more readily available in the UK with the creation of the new centres in Manchester and London. These facilities use readily available commercial technologies which require purpose-built buildings to incorporate gantries that deliver beams to the patients and necessary shielding. The Centre for the Clinical Application of Particles at Imperial is an interdisciplinary collaboration aiming to develop the technologies, systems, techniques and capabilities necessary to deliver a paradigm shift in the clinical exploitation of particles. A dedicated facility for studying radiobiology is being designed called LhARA (Laser hybrid Accelerator for Radiobiological Applications). LhARA will significantly improve our understanding of radiobiology and allow novel accelerator and detector technology to be demonstrated. This seminar will cover why particle beam therapy is important, issues with current technologies and plans for LhARA.
