LhARA PoPLaR meeting: 23Aug2024; 14:00 BST

ZOOM: https://imperial-ac-uk.zoom.us/j/92877706542?pwd=SVRnWUpYRDdOZVY2ZnBmM3grSnFpZz09

Agenda

  1. Updates from DL (H.O, B.S, K.L):

Materials provided by STFC: 6 quadrupoles (with option to go down) Gradient 150 T/m Gradient quality around 2% Measurement of magnetic centre 20um desired, but flexible 10mm radius 20mm diameter (clear aperture) 18mm diameter (good field aperture) Quadrupole magnetic length 20mm Nickel coated for moderate vacuum compatibility 4 threaded holes and 2 dowels on each face Engraved mark on quadrupole face to allow determination of orientation and matching to magnetic centre. Identification marks on quadrupoles (done by manufacturer)

Thread size discussed- decided on M6 as preference Maximum frame size 130mm across Likely quadrupole cost 2k per quad Budget available around 12k

Basis of work: STFC to procure quadrupoles STFC to measure quadrupoles Colin Whyte to arrange transport to Strathclyde

Materials provided by Strathclyde University: Mounting plate arrangement within vacuum chamber - probably dead reckoning onto a single plate with perhaps dowels and discrete surface plate holes. Description of alignment method, possibly laser through the aperture with Mylar targets? Provision of any protection inserts/sheets (e.g. plastic) Collimators - likely aluminium plates with drilled holes.

Timeline: Quotes end of August Review early Sep with Ross and Clive Hill (+Ben etc) Procurement Sept/October Receipt by end of September Measure by end of October Early November shipping to Strathclyde Mounting on beamline November Experiment early December

Discussion to aim for end of November mounting to ensure beam time window not missed.

  1. Discussion on quad attachment/alignment/mounting (All)

R.G. proposes optical rail to mount all components on so it can be lifted vertically without disturbing Thompson. Weight calculations for each quad (rough estimate of a few lbs per quad, collimators assumed to be light) to be done to check weight baring.

  1. Simulation updates (J.M)

BDSIM initial simulations show somewhat a similar design to the linear optics for pencil beam with 0.3MeV spread. Proper side by side analysis is to be completed for a point source with limited spread. R.G. to send parameters from the SCAPA line both in input csv and real time readings from the beam for input into Linear Optics and BDSIM. Additional worries about the linear optics source particle generation raised (K.L) to be fixed before next meeting. BDSIM- PoPLaR Visuals.pdf BDSIM Visuals
