LhARA Weekly Meeting 26th May 2020; 14:00 BST

Notes

Present: KL, GA, HTL, JPa, JPar, MD, OE, TSD, WS, WGJ, RMcl, CW

  1. Notes of previous meetings and actions:
  • KL: Create draft response to referees.
    • Stands.
  • JPa Draft reply to Y.Prezado's request.
    • Stands.
  1. Status of publication:
  • Status of draft: KL
    • Deadline for comments Thursday 28May20, lunchtime.
  1. Updates:
    • Capture section: CW
      • Still trying to assembled the necessary infrastructure. Have contact regarding VSIM at RAL. TSD will begin to develop the simulation, but there is little support at RAL or in Stratchclyde.
      • There are limitations with VSIM. Might be possible to use CST which has excellent GUI, but the plasma code may not be as robust as VSIM.
      • Progress on modelling of plasma: R.Bingham has made some calculations that indicate the timescales for the onset of the diochtron instability. Since the geometry is crucial, RB has been given the present dimensions. TSD has calculated the beam envelope in the lens.
      • CW has made a simulation of the filling of the lens with an unnulus electron-emitter position at the end of the lens.
      • ERC application is under consideration.
    • Simulation:
      • Particle production at laser target: HTL
      • Has been working on the dose-rate calculations, now complete.
      • Has been able to run SMILEI and is now digesting the output from the simulation. HTL is trying to use the particle tracking provided by the simulation. Now testing to see whether he can interpret the data from the simulation.
      • Next week HTL expects to present some particle distributions either from a 2D or a 3D simulation.
      • JPa asks how tracking is done in EPOCH. OE explains that position of particles on the grid would be presented. Background is wish to track ensemble of particles, perhaps as in accelerator simulations.
    • Transport through Gabor lenses and energy selection: TSD
      • See slides.
    • Any other simulation
      • None.
  1. Next steps
    • JPar: First of the series of the radiobiology meeting will be on Friday, 15:00. Presentation on and discussion of work at Clatterbridge. This will be a launch point for future discussions, perhaps monthly.
      • JPar solicits input/presentations at future meetings. Also open for ideas for how to develop the programme.
    • WS: need to revisit some of the simulations when the new source and focusing simulations are in place. Particular focus on the space-charge handling.
    • KL: Seek now to initiate a second "Diagnostics and instrumentation" thread.
  1. AOB
    • KL explained that he had a meeting with STFC later in the week to discuss the development of the LhARA programme. All input would be gratefully received.
    • CCAP plenary meeting will be 24Jun20; please volunteer talks. The agenda will be assembled shortly.
