LhARA fortnightly Meeting 30th March 2021; 14:00 BST

Notes

  1. Notes of previous meetings and actions
    • Status of actions:
      • None recorded.
  1. Update on STFC initiative to prepare proposal to UKRI Infrastructure Advisory Committee: KL
    • K.Kirkby has been contacted by M.Noro and is now involved in the development of the bid. M.Noro has contacted A.Giacca, AG yet to reply.
    • Note added: Deadline now known, 16Apr21.

  1. Radiobiology programme and articulation of LhARA USPs: J. Parsons, A. Giacca
    • No update this week.
  1. Status and progress in key LhARA development themes:
1 Evaluation of the benefits of the initiative & optimisation of the R&D programme: S. Green, P. Price
    • PP: PP and SG met this morning. Agreed that a comprehensive white paper is needed. It was agreed to push this foreward with more urgency. KL will find some admin support to help get the first of the necessary metings..
2 Development of next steps in LhARA accelerator R&D programme: C. Whyte, J. Pasternak
    • CW: Work is progressing on the Gabor lens paper and in the preparation of a plan for the next steps in the development. Collaboration has been established with the University of Swansea. Next meeting will be aimed at defining the way forward. Discussions with the LhARA proponents within the CI have been initiated. STFC call for funding for engagement/impact IAA at Strathclyde will be considered as a source of funds. Need for longer-term funding noted.
    • JPa: Design of FFA ring continues. Presently assumes a single spiral element as this is the cheepest and simplest solution. Want variable-energy extraction and zero chromaticity. This requires particular magnet properties and complicated windings to ensure that beam tuning can be done. Attempt to use rectangular magnet is now being made. The price to pay is more rapid acceleration, or the use of a doublet lattice. The horizontal and vertical tunes can be adjusted using two magnets rather than a single one. Can keep working point and stability at injection. Zero-chromaticity requirement still being worked on.
    • TG asked about possibility of using magnetic induction acceleration. JPa replied that this had not yet been considered -- medical application is to push beam into extraction septum. TG offered to review possibility; JPa agreed.
    3 Proton- and ion-acoustic imaging: J. Bamber, P. Beard
    • J.McGarrigle has made progress determining the power spectrum of a proton beam in a water phantom. Next step is to share power spectrum with B.Cox (UCL) to begin study of acoustic signal.
4 Outline Conceptual Design Report for the PoP biological-assessment facility: R. McLauchlan, T. Price
    • No update this week.
  1. All other updates:
    • Any update: All
      • No further updates.
