SmartPhantom meeting: Tuesday 24th September 2019, 11:30 BST

Notes:

Present: KL, HTL, JB, AK

  1. Notes and actions from last meeting:
    • KL: Liaise to develop concept for polishing.
      • Stands.
    • KL: Prepare revision to schedule for the next meeting.
      • Stands.
    • KL,AK,HTL: Consult to specify the data recording at MedAustron.
      • Stands.
    • AK: Invent a note numbering scheme so that HTL's note can be "published" on the wiki as a CCAP note.
      • Stands.
    • HTL: Add CCAP note number to the header of the note and post it as a CCAP note.
      • Stands.
    • KL: Email D.Nardini and I.Clark to explain the the next steps in the programme and to request machining of carbon fibre (two frames, two connector strips).
      • Done.
    • AK: Purchase hard-drive to store SmartPhantom data in operation.
      • Stands.
    • KL or HTL: Transport optical components from Imperial to RAL (LC).
      • Stands. KL will take them to RAL tomorrow (Wednesday, 25Sep19).
    • LC: Complete detailed design of the boot.
      • Stands.
    • KL: Send fibre invoices to HTL.
      • Done.
    • HTL: Provide spreadsheet with revised, precise estimate of fibre cost.
      • Done.
    • KL: Prepare a revised costing spreadsheet for next meeting.
      • Stands.
  1. Baseline schedule and progress against schedule: KL/HTL
    • Schedule will be driven in the short term by the completion of the carbon fibre frames. Point added: carbon fibre pieces will be completed tomorrow, Wednesday 24Sep19.
    • Schedule needs now to be revised.
  1. Mechanical design/manufacture update: LC
    • Additional design element required to ‘black out’the ends of the fibres which are not at the connector end of the doublet layer.
  1. Control system and SciWire readout update: AK
    • Source delivers 9KBq to the fibre plane (measured by JB, AK). This level of radiation does not yield sufficient scintillation light for the camera to register. Options include use of an alpha source, but, the alphas may not penetrate even the fibre cladding.
    • The source-commissioning exercise is required to map the scintillating/clear-fibre/camera and to determine the conversion from light yield to energy deposition.
    • AK noted that UV light can excite the fibre and therefore the SciWire will mapped using collimated UV light. For the SmartPhantom, the UV light will not penetrate the resin. So, can map fibres by illuminating the ends of the fibres with the collimated UV light.
    • JB proposed that a PMT could be used to detect the single-photon level of light production. The PMT could be used either on the whole detector or on a subset of fibres. Perhaps experiment with the SciWire set up while a SmartPhantom station is being constructed.
  1. Optical readout: JB
    • No update this week.
  1. Simulation/analysis update: HTL
    • Agreed that there was a need to simulate the source experiment. We noted that the distance from the source to the SciWire was approximately 5mm.
  1. Spend status, discussion of outstanding requirement: KL/All
    • Next meeting.
  1. Next steps: All
    • Complete the carbon fibre frames and connector pieces (done). Then move to second test winding.
    • SciWire readout development on AK's return.
    • HTL proceed with simulation of 90Sr excitation of fibres.
  1. DONM
    • Agreed to meet at 11:00 Wednesdays.
    • We agreed that we need to visit MedAustron to make sure that details of the deployment/operation of the SmartPhantom are clear and correctly specified. KL initiate discussion of of visit to MedAustron to review SmartPhantom design.

  1. AoB
    • We agreed to commit to the December shifts noted by M.Puchalska. We can no longer realistically be ready for October 2019.

Summary of actions:

  • KL: Liaise to develop concept for polishing.
