Abstract
The Next Ion Medical Machine Study (NIMMS) leverages CERN expertise in the accelerator field to develop a portfolio of technologies and competences for new medical facilities. The focus is mainly on the acceleration and transport of carbon and helium ions, which have several advantages compared to protons, but whose diffusion remains limited due to the size and cost of the machine.
After an introduction to the ongoing European initiatives, among which the activities of the South East European International Institute for Sustainable Technologies (SEEIIST), the seminar will cover the designs and technologies that we are developing to make the facility as compact as possible and to accelerate higher beam intensities for a flexible dose delivery, from the conventional slow-extracted spill, up to the FLASH regime.
